Explanation

The Lakota (also known as Teton, Tetonwan ("dwellers of the prairie"), Teton Sioux ("snake, or enemy") are a Native American tribe. They are part of a confederation of seven related Sioux tribes (the Oceti Šakowiŋ or seven council fires) and speak Lakota, one of the three major dialects of the Sioux language.

The Lakota are the western-most of the three Sioux-language groups, occupying lands in both North and South Dakota. The seven bands or "sub-tribes" of the Lakota are:

Sicaŋǧu (a.k.a. Brulé, Burned Thighs)
Oglala (Scatters Their Own)
Itazipco (a.k.a. Sans Arc, Without Bows)
Huŋkpapa (Camps at the End of the Camp Circle)
Miniconjou (Planters by the Water)
Sihasapa (Blackfoot Sioux)
Oóhenuŋpa (Two Kettles)

In the Lakota Medicine Wheel
(ongoing pattern of life and death):

Yellow
- the color of the East, rising sun, Morning Star, Wisdom

Red
- the color of the South, warmth, happiness, generosity; connected with the afterlife; nourishment of every kind comes from the south

Black - the color of the West, connected with the power of rain and the purity of water: growth follows the rain... releasing ignorance; home of the Thunder-being whose wings produce thunder and lightening flashes from his eyes... stands against evil, ensuring respect of others

White
- the color of the North, home to winter, promotes good health; those who misbehave look to the north for widom to walk a straight path

The medicine wheel is a sacred symbol used by Plains tribes and others to represent all knowledge of the universe.

The medicine wheel consists of a circle with horizontal and vertical lines drawn through the circle's center. Sometimes, an eagle feather is attached in the wheel's center.
